What you should know . . .
These lessons focus on the powerful stories of the Holy Spirit’s work in the early followers of Jesus. Jesus promised that after He ascended into heaven, He would send a Helper to be with His followers. That Helper is the Holy Spirit, who now dwells within everyone who believes in Jesus.
LESSON INTRODUCTION
Where are we? (time and location):
In the City of Philippi (Slide 1: map of Philippi)
Do you remember: (Show arrow symbol.)
Jesus went UP (point up)
The Holy Spirit came DOWN (point down)
The disciples went OUT (point anywhere using both hands)
Today we are going to join Paul and Silas … in JAIL!
Do you remember that Paul, Silas and Timothy sailed over the ocean, traveled to Philippi and met Lydia by the river? (Slide 2: River) After that, because they wouldn’t stop talking about Jesus, Paul and Silas were thrown in jail! (Slide 3: City of Philippi) (Slide 4: Jail where Paul and Silas were held.) Are you ready to join them in jail? Let’s go!
GOD-CENTERED STORYTELLING
Paul and Silas sat on the cold jail floor (shiver; hug self to keep warm). They had chains round their ankles (stretch legs out, grasp each ankle in turn, say cha-ching as if wrapping a chain round each one.) They did not want to be in jail! (shake head). But were their faces sad? (make a sad face). NO! Were they crying? (trace tears down face) NO! Were they trying to escape? (move legs up and down; wriggle around). NO! Were they singing? (make a happy face, say lalala.) YES! Paul and Silas knew that the Holy Spirit was with them, and so they were calm and relaxed (blow long breath out; put palms out and bring downwards). They sang praises to God! (Begin singing a song that the children know well so that they join in. For example: Jesus Loves Me/ My God is so Big, etc.)
It was midnight. Paul and Silas kept praying (put hands together in prayer) and singing (hum quietly). All the other prisoners were listening (cup hands over ears.) Suddenly, there was an earthquake! (say “rumble, rumble rumble;”shake legs around; tremble). All the prisoners’ chains fell off! (pretend to take chains off ankles; say cha-ching). Paul and Silas jumped up (jump up). They said, “Hooray!” (say that with me: Hooray!”) The jailer was scared (put fists to mouth, chatter teeth). He thought all the prisoners would escape. But Paul called out, “We’re all here!” (say that with me: “We’re all here!”) The jailer was amazed! He became calm! That day, the jailer and all his family were baptized and they all believed in God. (Sit down.)
EXPLORE THE STORY
Spend five minutes discussing the story. Possible wondering questions/starter points:
I wonder if Paul and Silas ever felt scared when they were in jail?
I wonder why they were singing?
I wonder what they prayed?
I wonder what the other prisoners thought?
I wonder if the Holy Spirit still helps people be calm?
I wonder if you’ve ever felt the Holy Spirit keeping you calm?
RESPOND TO THE STORY
Compose a class prayer, written or oral, using the following prompt:
Thank you, Holy Spirit, for keeping us calm when…
Follow the prompt with a list provided by the children. Perhaps the teacher can offer the first suggestion. If the prayer is written on a large sheet of paper, once completed, invite the children to decorate or color the edges with calm colors.
